Exploring New Adventures
Have you ever found yourself in a place where you just couldn’t endure staying?
Well, I found myself in a position like that not too long ago and for the first time in my adult life I had the ability to walk away. This choice preserves my health in many ways, but puts me at a disadvantage in the job market. It’s terrifying to be in the position of having to re-invent myself.
I’m not afraid of change and my faith tells me that I will be ok in the long run. But, the day to day of exploring new possibilities is daunting.
What I’m finding is that I need to look at the skills I have and see just how to apply them to the new world I’m walking in to. Some advise I recently received was to go through and create content about solutions I came up with over the years. Micro-fixes in content form.
So, that’s what I’m going to start blogging and vlogging about.
And the very first item will be leaving military service. Not the all encompassing process, that would take way too long for a micro-fix. But, some of the basics instead.
Before you leave active duty service:
Make copies of ALL of your records. When I EOS’d I had to do this the old fashioned way with paper copies. Today I believe it is possible to get digital copies. But do NOT leave services without copies of medical/dental/personnel records.
If at all possible, make a financial plan. Work with folks at MWR or other services and have a plan BEFORE you EOS.
After you EOS:
Go to the closest VA office and get your medical coverage set up!
Even if you were the picture of health, consider having a disability screening conducted.
If you are planning to use your education benefits go talk to your local school’s Veteran Services office.
I waited on the healthcare and disability claims and didn’t need to. These are benefits that I earned from my service to my country and if you served honorably you earned them too.
