Micro-Fix: Choice Theory - What We Can (and Can’t) Control

Dr. William Glasser’s Choice Theory is one of those ideas that sounds simple but changes everything. It teaches that the only thing we truly control is our own behavior. We can’t control others, the weather, traffic, or how someone else feels about us. But we can control how we respond.

The Core Belief

All behavior is an attempt to meet five basic needs:

  1. Survival

  2. Love and belonging

  3. Power

  4. Freedom

  5. Fun

When those needs aren’t met, conflict, stress, or frustration follows. The micro fix is learning to identify which need isn’t being met—and then choosing a healthy way to meet it.

Control the Controllables

When you stop wasting energy trying to change what’s outside your control, you gain power over what’s inside it: your attitude, effort, and mindset.
Ask yourself daily:

  • “What can I influence here?”

  • “What’s outside my control?”
Then, release the rest. It’s liberating.

Micro Fix Takeaway: Peace begins where control ends. Focus your effort where it actually counts—on your own choices.
